Steeds meer bedrijven beloven mee te helpen de klimaatverandering een halt toe te roepen door hun eigen uitstoot van broeikasgassen zoveel mogelijk te beperken. Toch merken veel bedrijven dat ze hun uitstoot niet volledig kunnen elimineren, of zelfs niet zo snel kunnen verminderen als ze zouden willen. De uitdaging is vooral lastig voor organisaties die streven naar netto nuluitstoot, wat betekent dat ze net zoveel broeikasgassen uit de lucht halen als ze erin stoppen. Voor velen zal het nodig zijn om koolstofkredieten te gebruiken om de uitstoot te compenseren die ze niet op een andere manier kwijt kunnen raken. De Taskforce on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets (TSVCM), gesponsord door het Institute of International Finance (IIF) met kennisondersteuning van McKinsey, schat dat de vraag naar koolstofkredieten tegen 2030 met een factor 15 of meer zou kunnen stijgen en tegen 2050 met een factor 100. In totaal zou de markt voor koolstofcredits in 2030 meer dan 50 miljard dollar waard kunnen zijn.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
